Description

This is a wonderful and expressive Fine Vintage Modern Mid Century Cubist Roman Figures Painting, Watercolor on Paper or Artist Board, by the late Southern California Modernist painter, M. Pill. I could not find any biographical information on this talented painter, but perhaps you know more about her or her work? This piece depicts an emotionally charged Cubist figural scene, showing a man laying down, possibly wounded, who wears a Roman-style toga. He is likely an emperor of nobleman, and possibly Julius Ceaser (100 - 44 B.C.) A bare-chested woman kneels by his side, while three standing women with sorrowful facial expressions gaze in their direction. This piece is rendered in a dizzying and expressive manner, with bold geometric lines and shadowing, reminiscent of Pablo Picasso's midcentury masterpieces. Signed: "M. Pill" in the lower right corner. This artwork likely dates to the late 1950's - 1960's. Approximately 32 1/2 x 40 1/2 inches (including frame.) Actual visible artwork is approximately 21 1/2 x 29 1/2 inches. Good overall condition for decades of age and storage, with some separation to the frame in the lower left corner (please see photos.) Additionally, the wire on the back of the frame is loosely mounted and should be fixed or replaced before hanging. Acquired from an old estate collection in Encino, California.
