Description

A very beautiful piece! Measuring 14”H with an 8.25” diameter base and weighs about 9 pounds. This piece is a stunning example of the artist Claude Michel’s known as Clodion’s work. Claude Michel (20 December 1738 – 29 March 1814), known as Clodion, was a French sculptor in the Rococo style, especially noted for his works in marble, bronze, & terracotta. This particular sculpture shows Venus as a beautiful woman sitting while a charming putto tries to crawl up to her lap. The scene is pastoral with grapes and birds. A tambourine lays at her feet. This sculpture is so beautifully modeled, the faces of Venus and Putti so serene! Please see my detailed photos as an integral part of the description. This is an original reproduction. It has a makers mark on the bottom but I cannot identify it. Please note: one of the heads of the birds is missing. This is made of a patinated terra cotta plaster. There are areas of loss and crazing to the patination. Still, this piece retains all the original beauty of a true work of art. The original of this piece was made around 1800 and gifted to the Louvre. It was stolen from the Louvre warehouse in 2014 and is still missing. Please let me know if you have any questions.
